Why we designed our own NAS for use in our data center
In recent years, we technetium Inc. had the opportunity to deal with Snap because our model 14000 Snap servers. One day, we installed new managed switches and management console snap Web is no longer working. It would just hang at gigabit speed. To make a long story short, after exhausting all my options on the Internet I sent a technical support Snap an email to try to solve the problem. Here is their response:

I have 2 12000 snap and they will not negotiate 1000TX my Dell PowerConnect 5324 switch. I'm afraid to put the card network debugging mode for anything other than the automobile.
It also shows half duplex when the switch shows full duplex.

To my dismay, they wanted $ 120 just to talk to me, and I bet they wanted another $ 1,000 and then update the software. On their website I did not find any way to buy the support of this model any more. And by the way, to add replication between 2 of the Snap Servers, it would cost something like $ 1000 per box.
So here we are, with 2 boxes, no support, and I bet you can not even buy parts for it over Snap, much less elsewhere (maybe eBay?).
Started to buy NAS new replacements. Originally these 14000 were $ 10K each, for about 1 TB of storage. All things being equal, I should be able to buy a NAS box for really cheap (yeah!). What I found was a high quality system that would cost RAID 5 NAS between $ 3,500 and 4,500, not to mention that 1 TB Snap 520 is $ 5K more. It's when we decided to build our own NAS servers!
With a great backround in the server hardware / PC, it was easy for me to return the equipment and high quality branded components. I still Pentium Pro servers that work! I chose the best equipment, put it in a rack server case, and voila! I have a NAS. Here is the list of components:

We need an operating system now, and why I chose FreeNAS (title = "Http://www.freenas.org" target = _blank "> http://www.freenas.org") that runs on FreeBSD. You can not claim an operating system more stable. And by the way, the operating system will FreeNAS memory and boots from a CF card (no chance of hard drive crash and destroy the config). This custom built NAS system has proved a great, and our client is very happy with the money we saved.
