About Biometric Access Control e
Biometrics, or recognizing the identity of a person based on one aspect of a biological person is actually a very old technology. We use every day when we use the biometrics "computer" that we call the human spirit: For example, when we recognize a person looking at his face, or when you verify a signature written cons that we trust to be a copy of a bona fide signature. The futuristic sense of biometric technology occurs when we compare the traditional with the new biometric features that we in electronics. Now we can use electronic devices to make judgments about the biometric authenticity of a person, that "X is the person who they say they are?" Since the era of digital information is upon us, technology came on that allows authentication exceptional accuracy, and perhaps a much more reliable authentication of a person Biometrics traditional human-based trial.
Experts in authentication technology in general to rank the criteria which are used to verify the identity of a person based on a few different categories. "What you know ', or WYK is a form of authentication: a common version of what happens when you give us an electronic banking terminal PIN (personal identification number). "What you" or WYH, is another criterion, and it refers to the possession of an object ID as an identity card or passport, but you might even consider a simple door key as a kind of WYH proof of identity to allow access to a property private or controlled access. Biometrics, according to this classification scheme, would generally be called "What You" or WYA. It is the presentation of a physical aspect of yourself that is quite unique and individually you to obtain authentication.
Electronic Access Control (EAC) on the properties based on biometrics is not a new technology, which for decades and has taken many forms. Hollywood movies have long been high security facilities that use finger and hand prints, the eyes (iris and retina) scans, facial recognition and voice and so on, to verify identity. Of course, the media is generally technology as used by spies, high-tech enterprise installations, the ultra-wealthy elites and others in society: perhaps to protect valuable assets and information, or to prevent espionage and treason. Only recently has it become an exciting time for the rest of us, technologically speaking, as "the era of digital technology has made electronic biometric standard quality and price is within reach of the average consumer.
Biometric Fingerprint Door Locks
The newest item is a consumer device access control biometric scans of fingerprints person to allow access to a property, or even a vehicle. Industry commentators are seeing high-tech biometrics as the new emerging technology that will eventually replace or at least be offered alongside all other forms of access control (such as keys, or electronic access control based on keyboards PIN code, magnetic swipe card or RFID (RFID) chip / key-fobs). One of the main reasons is that the biometric device potentially offers an entry control solution that is free typical problems which beset older technologies. This advantage might be simply to avoid that horrible feeling you get when you are standing outside your door and can not find your keys, or if you have both PINS in your head that you can not remember the right to access a property. This is perhaps where the so-called magnetic stripe card has lost its magnetic properties, or if you lost the card, or when a RFID key-fob has more batteries, is stolen, or simply just do not connect to the lock. Biometrics could be advantageous for those who have difficulty with physical the operation of any of these older technologies. With biometrics, just a finger, placed on a small screen that scans fingerprints you can then access your property.
This is a relatively new technology for the consumer market, so if you plan to try a biometric access control device, it is better to be cautious in terms of the unit you select. What should you look? Knowing this could mean the difference between having a new and kinder to your door, or one that ends with a lot of frustration, as you imitate Jack Nicholson in a duplication of the hatchet "Here's Johnny" scene from the movie "The Shining." So, here are some Exploring in the selection of a biometric device.
When to Use Biometric ABC
The wide range of benefits to not wear or use of keys or other physical devices can not be described in detail here and most people can instantly think of a list of benefits for their own home. Suffice it to say, the potential benefits can be many and varied. They can range from increased accessibility for potential disabilities, the elderly and youth, through benefits obtained in our "great Aussie beach culture," which many consider to be ideal to be able to go to the beach and not to take along a set of keys (or other devices that may be lost or stolen). Some applications can make huge profits the implementation of a system of biometric access control, where stocks control keys or other peripherals an evolving client would be "a nightmare" or simply prohibitive. Some examples are child care centers, schools, industrial complexes and administrative offices, and government high security and commercial operations. The United States "Disneyland" (and also the location of Hong Kong) have established a system of fingerprints called "Ticket Tag" to control all its visitors with the control system the complex set of access levels depending on what types of tickets purchased for visitors. Hotels can also greatly benefit from eliminating the need to maintain stocks of key or card, while freeing the client to have to either carry or check the key at reception each time they enter / exit the building. Computer networks can remotely control certain biometric locks and some locks are Programs to remove the authority of a customer to access a room automatically after a specified time interval. Many biometric devices have built in "audit trail", which can keep track of user input, the date and time. This can be useful to prevent "buddy bundying" in the workplace, or provide a form of surveillance on children for parents concerned. The uses and potential benefits of biometrics are only limited by imagination, and some benefits may make a world of difference to older technologies.
Fortunately, in most applications, biometric technology is a suitable replacement for older technologies, and biometrics can provide a versatile solution for access control situations residential, government and commercial / industrial. However, there are some exceptions. A case occurred a few years ago where a British prison invested in biometric scanning devices fingerprints to control access by the internal parts of the prison. Because the biometric device was selected for the prison not exact, the detainees have been quick to exploit the weakness of the individual, who simply do not discriminate well between the fingers different enough to be able to keep prisoners. Therefore, they were able to access unauthorized areas internally. (The important issue of accuracy biometric devices is discussed immediately below.) While the overall prison security was not compromised for a short time, the black market flourishes prison. Some commentators on this event rightly noted that the prison was not an entirely good thing to have a biometric device, since some prisoners might not hesitate to cut the finger of a keeper, if it meant access to freedom (Or, in some cases an extra carton of cigarettes). It is certainly the last place I want to install biometric access control, but not necessarily for security problems, because the biometric module can sometimes distinguish between a connected and a cut finger, based on measures such as reading body temperature. The main reason for not installing such devices is simply that prison inmates may perceive wrongly that they could use the severed finger to access their freedom, and-regardless of their success in the avoidance of false- perception alone could a lot of work to the detriment of the unfortunate prison guard.
Physical qualities may sometimes not marry well with biometric technology. A visitor from Disney has had problems with readers, because she had lymphedema in her right arm, which was that it chosen to have their fingers scanned. When the arm swelled during the day, his fingers extended and joined different fingers in the eyes of the biometric scanner. A simple remedy in his case would be to use the arm that does not swell, but it gives an overview of a problem that could occur for some users. Very rarely, people have little actual fingerprints that can interfere with certain biometric readers, which in the malfunction of the device for such a user.
Biometrics Accuracy
In the purchase of a lock Biometric must take care to choose a brand of device that has a high level of accuracy, or, in other words, a low level of error. In biometrics, there are two typical measurements made on biometric error: the FRR or False Reject Ratio "or FAR and" acceptance rate false ". The bottom of each ratio or rate, the better the biometric product.
RIF is also known as the "insult rate" and it is quite the appropriate term. This is the amount of time you are insulted by your door lock, as wrong, but quietly beeps to inform you that you're not for you, but rather a pretender to the throne. RIF directly translates into ease of use device. A registered user (that is, a person whose fingerprints are held in the memory of the lock command or lock as a participant approved) should be allowed entry easily. If a biometric device has a low FRR, it should not require a series of attempts before they can enter in your home or work. RIF high rate insult or biometric device can be frustrating to live with.
The second measure accuracy, FAR, is critical. It relates to the security provided by the device. How easy it is for fingerprints of another user with a real "Pretender" to enter the camera? How easy it is for a technology imitation to fool the lock into thinking it is the real finger? A high FAR or fraud may be a security violation just waiting to happen.
Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics
By buying a biometric lock, carefully review the FAR and FRR rates. They should both be as small as possible. However, it also seeks to examine how the specifications are met. Some biometric locks use what might be called a "security setting" to compromise between fingerprints authorized users and ease discrimination entry: that is to say a framework that allows you to find a compromise between performance or insults or false false authorization to unauthorized parties. In my opinion, something very bad to have a biometric device, because the user should not be forced to change settings Essential: Everything should be purely automatic. Performance of a biometric lock should be about achieving two levels of precision in the same time, because that is what is required in the real world. Manufacturers who build a level of adjustment in their device may be trying to achieve better performance figures for their products than they can deliver in practice.
It also pays not to be too serious about performance specifications offered by manufacturers. While they may provide a useful guide, the specification states that, for example, a "false 1:10000 rejection ratio "could never achieve such performance in practice. These performance figures are based on a set of empirical data and mathematical analysis. The best thing to do is to test the model with your fingerprint, the finger instead enlisted in the device entry and gain a number of times and see how it is reproducible. If the images are digitized fingers repeatedly until you are authorized tired of testing the functioning of input, then chances are the lock will be easier to live. If you find a lock that only beeps refused entry and asks you to rescan once in a hundred, it would be safe to say that this is going to be a good lock to use on a daily basis. Rare physical attributes (as described above) can sometimes confuse some biometric readers. So, first test, and ensure that the product is specifically suited to your fingers.
Another indicator of reliability would be to check with the vendor to see which is the biometric module in the biometric device. Are they a reliable and recognized high-tech equipment?
Easy Biometric use
Figure 1: biometric device with a friendly, easy to use interface main duct, menu pad industry, navigation and a great standard. A screen * SEQ Figure ARAB full, standard numeric keypad on the front a device contributes to the ease of operation.
It is not very good with a biometric device if you need Ph.D. for the proverbial use. Some locks are so complex to use than even watch a video of the steps necessary to operate the device (Leave it alone program) is something confusing. Of course, the ease with which you can use a biometric device or contributes significantly affects the how you will be happy with your purchase. Looking for a great and easy to see the screen, with control functions are menu navigation is intuitive. If the biometric device is set up as, for example - the most user-friendly mobile phones or digital cameras with features like four-way navigation, keyboards, it is likely to be friendly. Try to make sure that if you want to go to a function, you do not need both a manual and a penchant for astrophysics: instead you just need the ability to read a simple menu and press navigation buttons or selection buttons.
Do not overlook the operator interface to the outside is when it comes to choosing a good biometric device. If the device has a standard numeric keypad of the industry on the body of the lock on the outside, reflecting access control easy when you choose to use an identification number in lieu of or in addition, a scanning fingerprints. A full keyboard in front of the camera is also significant that the number input into the biometric device (for programming of basic operations) will be easier than something that has only a few buttons and do not properly represent all numeric characters (0-9).
Biometrics and Privacy
There were valid concerns raised by privacy advocates and the press, more generally, on issues confidentiality related to biometrics use. Look for units that are not biometric capture and process only the image of the fingerprint digital, but rather the use of "minutiae", which are very specific details taken from a finger scan. A biometric device works with minutiae points by immediately capturing facets of the finger and fingerprint, followed by a mathematical analysis of then-encrypted encoding these facets. Therefore, such a biometric device is not really compare images, but rather the very precise data that was collected. Drawing data from the biometric system may cause little, but the collection of useless data, rather than compromise the biometric of an individual. Some locks and network software that attach to them (if they are capable network) will also allow the programming locking so that guest users are stored in memory for a period of time. At the end of this period, data fingerprint minutiae is automatically removed from the system.
Sustainability Biometrics & Appearance
Sustainability is very simple. Take a look at the lock, is it protected against elements? Some locks have sliding covers that protect the biometric scanning window and buttons from dust, dirt, water and so on. The body is well done? Some locks have thicker walls alloy in construction to make them stronger, some parts plastic unit are most vulnerable. Is the finish built to last? Some biometrics "nanotechnology" which finishes the make it as high-tech outside because they are inside, and make them very resistant to scratches that can make them less attractive. Firmly locks that are built based on a design mortise can be a bit more expensive but are more robust security-which is of course what they are there to the end of the day.
This leads to the final criterion you should consider when buying a lock: is it Interestingly, and not visually complement (or load) in your premises. Unfortunately, it seems that many biometric locks have been designed with functionality in mind, and with little or not been given to the appearance, but there is no rule carved in stone a biometric device must be ugly, and some units are beautiful and elegant and make a strong statement on any door.
Conclusion
When everything is taken into account, taking the position to adopt this new Technology can be a rewarding experience: just make sure you select the right device for you, your situation and "aesthetic sensibilities ". The chances are that you'll be well rewarded for your care to purchase, and you will be able to truly enjoy the best things that exciting new technology can provide.

Biometric Cryptography Based on Fingerprints $117.9 This work describes certain special art of biometric systems. If we try to combine a biometric (fingerprint) system with some cryptographic system, we are confronted with the question, if there is enough information in the fingerprint. Some computations of the similarity among fingerprints have already been published but they have considered the matching of fingerprints. For cryptographic tasks, it is more important to exploit the information strength hidden in fingerprint papillary line structures. The answer to this question can be found in this work. If the information strength is adequate to the cryptographic requirements, we can design a system, which uses fingerprint technology as a biometric information input and offers biometric keys to the cryptographic subsystem. The detailed description of such biometric security system can be found also in this work, where all processes needed for the computations and processing are described.
