Body Worlds
History
Body Worlds was first presented in Tokyo in 1995. BODY WORLDS exhibitions have since been allowed by more than 50 museums and sites in North America, Europe and Asia.
Body Worlds 2 & The Brain Our three books Gem (the brain and nervous system) opened in 2005 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles and is currently set to open its next showing at the Franklin Institute.
Body Worlds 3 & The Story of the Heart (on the cardiovascular system) opened on February 25, 2006, the Museum of Natural Science in Houston. On July 9, 2009, this show started at the Buffalo Museum of Science Buffalo, New York, and is currently showing at the Science Centre in Toronto Ontario.
Body Worlds 4 commenced 22 February 2008 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, England and was in the Cellars in Brussels until March 2009.
Body Worlds & The Mirror of Time (with human development and aging) made its debut at The O2 in London in October 2008.
Krperwelten & Der Zyklus des Lebens opened in Heidelberg in January 2009.
Body Worlds exhibitions have received more than 26 million visitors, making them attraction of the world's most popular tourism.
The room that its purpose and mission is the education of laymen about the human body, leading to a better understanding of health. All rights plastinates are people who donated their bodies for plastination via a body donation program.
Each Body Worlds exhibition includes about 25 full-body plastinates with expanded or selective organs shown in positions that strengthen the role of certain systems. More than 200 real human specimens of organs and organ systems are displayed in glass cases, some showing various medical conditions.
Some of these specimens, such as Tai Chi Man demonstrate interventions, including prosthetics such as hip replacements or heart valves.
It also includes liver cirrhosis and lungs of smokers and nonsmokers are placed side by side. One display features prenatal fetuses and embryos, some congenital disorders.
To produce specimens of Body Worlds, von Hagens employs 340 people in five laboratories in three countries, China, Germany and Kyrgyzstan. Each laboratory is categorized by specialty, with the laboratory of China focusing on animal specimens. One of the specimens the most difficult to create was the giraffe that appears in the body Worlds & the life cycle. The specimen was taken three years to complete ten times more it takes to prepare a human body. Ten people are needed to move the giraffe, because its final weight (Like all the samples after plastination) is equal to the animal of origin.
Several exhibits Body Worlds (as well as Von Hagens himself) were presented in the 2006 movie Casino Royale. Among the guests were plastinates Play Poker Trio (which plays a key role in a scene) and breeding of horses and rider.
Regulatory Framework
Czech Republic
In July 2008, the Czech Senate has passed legislation to combat illegal trade in human tissues and the ban "publicity for gifts of cells and tissue for the benefits of money or similar".
France
On Tuesday, April 21, 2009, a French judge decided to go to the Paris Exposition of Our Advice: The Universe Within ", saying that with the corpses for profit was a violation "of the respect they deserve." In accordance with the law, the proper place for corpses in the cemetery " said Judge Louis-Marie Raingeard. Raingeard ordered to close the exhibition within 24 hours face a fine of 20,000 euros (over $ 26,000) for each day it remained open. United Kingdom
England and Wales
The British Parliament created specific legislation for plastination exhibitions in England and Wales under the Human Tissue Act 2004. This requires a license by the Human Tissue Authority. In March 2008, the Manchester Museum of Science & Industry has granted such a license to keep and Body Worlds 4 new license has been granted to the exhibition at the O2 Arena, London, 2008.
The Law on the Human Tissue Act replaced on anatomy 1832, which was found by an independent commission (The Redfern Report) to the inadequacy of the collection and use contemporary tissue, following the Alder Hey organs scandal.
Separate legislation exists in Scotland:
Scotland
Human Tissue (Scotland) 2006 which amended Act Anatomy Act 1984 covers Scotland. Under the terms of this Act, licenses for the treatment of human remains, including display, must be paid directly by the Scottish Office.
"Paragraph 9: If the Scottish Ministers think it is desirable to do so in the interest education, training or research, they may grant a license to a person to publicly display the body or, where applicable, the party and a person is authorized under this subsection, then display a body or a part of a body if, at the time of posting, it is permissible under this paragraph. "
Various organizations have given evidence to the Scottish Executive during the consultation process, including the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Wellcome Trust and the Museums Association.
United States
Various laws are proposed in different American States. Most proposals focus on issues concerning the sale of human remains and donor consent.
National legislation issues of consent and tissue donation is expressed in the Uniform Anatomical Gift (2006) adopted by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws which states that "an anatomical gift of a donor or body part can be made during the life of the donor for transplantation, treatment, research or education "and prohibits trafficking in human organs donated for profit.
In early 2008 the Federal Representative W. Todd Akin has proposed an amendment to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 to make it unlawful for a person to import human remains plastinated United States. "The president of the American Association of Anatomists has expressed concern that the scope of the law is "Too broad" and "Preventing the importation of plastinated specimens are all likely to restrict their use for medical education.." Bill amendment has been removed from the books at the end of the 2008 session of Congress.
California
California bill AB1519 (Ma) sponsored by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, would "require exhibitors to obtain a county permit, to do so, they must prove to the county health authorities that people whose bodies were exposed or their relatives had consented.
Assembly Bill 1519 would make California the first state to prohibit the commercial profit and public display of corpses or remains, unless exhibitors provide information and consent of the deceased or next of kin.
Florida
The state of Florida prohibits the sale or purchase of human remains and "centers Authorizes certain science in this state for transport plastinated organs, inside or outside this state and to expose these organizations for education public without the consent of the Board anatomic this state, if the science center notifies the board of such transportation or display, and the location and duration of exposure, at least 30 days before transport or exposure. "
Hawaii
In January 2009 Rep. Marcus Oshiro introduced two bills prompted by the presentation of the exhibition BODIES in this state.
HB28 related to Dead Bodies would add to prohibition of purchase of human cadavers, selling human cadavers and defined the term "human body" to include bodies and plastinated body parts. It would increase the fine for buying or selling a dead man to a maximum of $ 5000.
HB29 relating to corpses humans. Would prohibit the commercial display of human cadavers without a permit from the Ministry of Health.
New York
In June 2008, New York became the first state to enact legislation regulating body exposures. A bill that was sponsored by Senator Jim Alesi requires that any person having an exhibit that uses real human bodies in museums from New York to produce a permit detailing their origin.
Pennsylvania
Representative Bill Mike Fleck requiring proof of informed consent of the deceased or relatives of all people whose remains are put on display.
Washington
Washington State has considered a bill which "require a written authorization to display human remains for commercial purposes. "
Controversies
BODY WORLDS exhibitions have controversy and debate has focused on various issues. Religious groups, including representatives of the Church Catholic and some rabbis have opposed the display of human remains, saying it is incompatible with respect for the human body.
In 2003, while promoting a display in the Museum Erotica Hamburg Von Hagens announced his intention to create a sex plastinate. In May 2009 he unveiled a plastinate a couple having sex, for an exhibition in Berlin.
In 2007, the Bishop of Manchester has launched a campaign to coincide with the opening of Body Worlds in the city, accusing the exhibitors to be "Body Snatchers" and "stealing the NHS", arguing that organ donation for Plastination deprive the NHS organ transplant. The site included a government petition calling for "a review of the legislation on policies and practices of touring shows involving corpses. "
Consent is a primary objective of the discussion. Paul Harris Director of North Carolina State Board of Funeral Services, said: "Somebody at some level of government must be able to watch a death certificate, a declaration of an embalmer, donation documents ... It is a reasonable standard to apply. "The member Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco) said: "These screens are important educational benefits, but the body to help against a person will is" unacceptable.
All plastinated body exposed in Body Worlds came from donors who gave informed consent through a program of organ donation unique. Only adults over eighteen years of age can enroll in the program. Specimens pre-natal and infant exposures are obtained from morphological collections previously held by universities and medical institutions.
Organs from deceased persons who have not given their consent, such as patients hospitalized died from Kyrgyzstan and executed prisoners in China have never been used in a Body Worlds exhibition. In January 2004, the German news magazine Der Spiegel reported that von Hagens had bought corpses of executed prisoners in China he replied he did not know the origin of the bodies and returned seven corpses challenged to China. A commission established by the California Science Center in Los Angeles in 2004 confirmed commitment von Hagens ethical practices, and published its Summary of ethical review. The commission is death certificates and forms for body donation, and check consent of legal bodies in the exhibits. However, to ensure confidentiality and anonymity promised to donors for the body, Von Hagens' Institute for Plastination maintains a firewall between the donor body material and finished plastinated bodies. To date, more than 9,000 people pledged to donate their organs at the Institute for Plastination in Heidelberg, Germany.
Body Worlds has been accused of perpetuating "conservative" gender representations. international trade experts have objected to the way organizations for displaying commercial goods are imported, because the way which their classification codes (like "art collections") does not require the Centers for Disease Control stamps or death certificates, which are both required for medical cadavers. In most countries plastinated human specimens are classified under Customs Code classification systems 97,050,000.48 in the anatomical collections. This includes Customs Code oological collections, botanical, mineralogical or anatomical or items in such collections.
In an ethical analysis, Thomas Hibbs, professor of ethics and culture at Baylor University, a private Baptist affiliates cons cadaver displays to pornography in that they reduce the subject to the manipulation of body parts devoid of any wider significance of man. "
In a 2006 conference entitled "Plasti-Nation: How America has been won," Lucia Tanassi, Professor medical ethics and anthropology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the questions explored for ethicists about this new scientific frontier. Tanassi called provocative that ethics committees have contributed to the popularization of this process without showing any a line of inquiry, pointing to a report Ethics California Science Center. As part of this review, bioethicist Hans Martin Sass was sent to Heidelberg to match donor consents death certificates.
Concerns were expressed about aspects education, particularly the inclusion of these screens for school trips. St. Louis Diocese Archbishop Raymond Burke strongly suggested that Catholic schools to avoid scheduling field trips, saying children of parents, rather, must remain free to decide whether or not their children to see the exhibition. Von Hagens maintains control copyright on photos of its exhibits. Visitors are not allowed to take pictures, and press photographers are required to sign agreements allowing only one publication in a defined context, followed by a return of copyright to Von Hagens. Because of a similar agreement applied its bite (O-Tne, German) a German newspaper has suggested that the press refrain from reporting on the exhibition in Munich in 2003.
Competitors
The success of Body Worlds has resulted in several plastinated cadavers copycat shows featuring, including the United ... Exposure and our bodies: the universe in the United States, to open body in England, exploring the body in Taiwan, Mysteries of the human body in South Korea, Jintai Plastomic: Mysteries of the human body in Japan, Cuerpos Entraables Spain.
Some of these documents contain very similar to von Hagens' plastinated; Von Hagens said the protection of copyright, and continued exploration and Body body found. The costumes were based on an alleged copyright of certain body positions, but the trade says that the human body in all its diversity can not be protected.
These lawsuits have not stopped competing. While Korean police in Seoul has confiscated a few exhibits from the body discovered exposure was then successful.
Many of these competing exhibitions were organized by the U.S. company traded Prime Exhibitions. They started their first exposure to body opened in Blackpool, England, which ran from August to October 2004. In 2005 and 2006, the Company opened his body and discovered BODIES ... New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said: "Despite repeated denials, we now know that Premier itself can not not demonstrate the circumstances that led to the death of individuals. Nor is Premier able to establish that these people consented to their remains being used in this way. "
