Are IDE / ATA Hard Drive Enclosures endangered?
IDE hard drive was introduced in 1980 and since then they have been the de facto hard drive used by PC manufacturers worldwide. The ubiquity of the IDE / ATA standard and its adoption at the global level has led hundreds of millions of units being manufactured. Anyone who has purchased or owned a PC since the mid-1980s, whether for home use business have purchased a PC with an IDE / SAT disk drive inside.
In recent years, a new competitor, SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive has entered the fray and because it provides a significant improvement in transfer rates that has now replaced the IDE drives slower than the hard choices.
In addition to being faster SATA drives also have an interface completely different physical (how they connect to the PC or connect inside an enclosure). IDE / ATA hard drives can be recognized from the 2 rows of 20 pins on the end of the SATA Hard Drive while hard drives have two "cat-type connectors.
As PC with IDE drives installed hard to reach the end of their natural life or not it is appropriate to recover the PC's hard disk and retrieve data from disk and then use the hard drive in an enclosure. By doing this, not only are you able to remove your personal and confidential data, but also you can clean and reformat the drive and then create a cost-effective backup and storage solution.
If this is an IDE / ATA Hard Drive Recovered from a laptop then using a box that you create a portable backup solution really cheap. The boxes are easy to use, they connect to your PC via USB (or FireWire) they protect the hard drive is a case (usually aluminum) and are either self-powered through the USB cable or larger versions come with a power unit.
There is a problem on the horizon of that. Although there are still hundreds millions of IDE / ATA hard drives in use or pending recovery cases manufacturers IDE ATA / start reducing their investment in pregnant IDE / ATA. Many factories have already abandoned their production of IDE / ATA hard drive enclosures are nothing more than manufacturing SATA Enclosures disc.
So if you think you might need an IDE / case, it may be worth buying one as soon as possible.
