Do we need children more netbooks?
Netbooks are great. No, really, they are. Cheap, easy to carry, and virtually disposable, these small computers have led many schools to more student-computer ratios that really supports any device. And they have the final Dell Latitude 2110, Intel Classmate, or something in between, we have seen that they can work very well for students and teachers.
That said, there are many times when they simply do not cut the mustard. I started banging on something of a non-netbook Lenovo X100e. Although it looks and feels like a netbook in many respects, the dual-core processor and NVidia graphics Neo make pretty tolerable as a machine every day. It can not be done for the floor price of the average netbook, but its full-size keyboard and 11 "screen it worth the price (Amazon sells the model that I use for around $ 500).
Notice, however, what I said I started typing on this X100e (which, I must add, was my main computer for a couple of months now). So my MacBook Pro arrived. I'm not typing on the X100e more.
This does not mean Lenovo is not that great an ultraportable. It is really perfect for what he did. He moves well, it is durable, it has a large keypad, and performance is tolerable for everyday use. However, given the choice between tolerable and really fast, or between a usable screen and 15-inch high resolution glare glory, I'll opt for the latter. I'm sure I'll regret it the next time I'm on my way to New York and I'm 3 pounds away from light Lenovo easily cradled in my lap, but the compromises of such performance are now, since I spend as much as 15 hours a day on my computer, I can live with the feeling of aluminum warm on my knees and bursts of runners to train others, among whom I am in a hurry.
It me, though. I am a professional writer and content creator. I can not justify the cost of the MBP (and, to be honest, my wife allows me to you). By leveraging the low cost of entry represented by netbooks, schools can get many computers have much more hands, which makes non 1:01 only possible, but more realistic than it has ever been. The youngest in particular can benefit from netbooks that are perfectly sized for small hands, small BackBack and small spaces, not to mention lower costs and more robust features that make computers OK, even for the most accident-prone children.
