Digital Audio

Today most music is recorded on a digital audio workstation (DAW) in the heart of what is a computer software and registration. Some of the main actors in the recording software are now Media Technology Steinberg Cubase, Protools Digidesign Apple Logic, Cakewalk and Sonar. There are basically three things you can do with your DAW: save, edit, and mix. This article focuses on the first process, registration or "laying down the tracks."
As it is easy to be overwhelmed by the multitude of features, options and settings for the registration of software today, I'll stick to the basics. My examples use Cubase because it recording software I use. However, the basic process is similar to recording programs.
Start by installing your digital audio interface and recording software and their implementation to work together. For example: if you use Cubase, go to the Devices menu, select the Device Configuration window, and select the driver software that came with your interface.
Now, plug your instrument or Microphone (s). Most instruments with audio outputs to connect to the -10 dB input on your interface, the interface will then amplify the signal ten decibels. Microphones will be developed by an oscillator (often abbreviated as before), a feature built into many digital audio interfaces. Most microphones connects to the input of +4 dB, and button interface or reduce the signal by four decibels.
Then you configure your first recording project. In Cubase, select New Project from the File menu. You will be prompted to specify a location to store your files. Remember to create a new folder for each new project. Your recording software will then create subfolders as necessary. Save your new project. Then set the recording quality for your project, which is the sampling rate and bit depth. Select Project Setup from the Project menu in Cubase. Keep in mind that the use of CD of 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. Higher settings to improve quality, but also greatly increase the demand on the processor in your computer and the size of audio files generated and stored on your hard drive training.
If you are familiar with live mixing and understand the signal flow, you've made an excellent start on this next step. Create a new input bus (using Cubase VST Connections Features menu). Select a monaural microphone for individual instruments and many or stereo configuration if you use two microphones or instrument outputs with left and right. Set this bus to use the appropriate entry your digital audio interface. Now create a new audio track for recording (Add a track in the project menu in Cubase), and assign the input bus you just created to this title.
At this point, you can choose to save your track dry, use a processor external digital signal (DSP) to improve the signal (perhaps with compression, EQ, or reverb) before registration, or to use an insert to apply effects in Cubase. Plug-ins are DSP virtual instruments designed to work with your recording software. VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plug-ins work better with Cubase. Before buying plug-ins, check to see what plug-ins are pre-installed with your DAW software and what type (s) are compatible with your software. Cubase, for example, provides plug-ins for compression, EQ, reverb, and a variety of other effects commonly used. While the major studios routinely apply compression and EQ to tracks before registration, it is perfectly acceptable and often preferable to record your tracks dry, and then modify them later to take the time to experiment and find just the right effects to enhance your recording. Check your manual for how to add plug-ins in the flow signal during recording.
As you start recording, another important concept to understand is the signal to noise ratio (SNR). Parallel to the voice or instrument you want to save, you'll almost always recording a certain amount of ambient noise, including noise from inside the room (like a computer fan, fluorescent lamp ballast, or tap your foot) and outside (such as wind or road noise). Your goal is to maximize the signal-noise and reduce unwanted noise to the point where it is undetectable. To do this, both by sound insulation and making your signal loud and clear as possible without distortion.
Now it is time to register. Select the track you'll save, and make sure the correct input is assigned. Enable record or "arm Track "by pressing the red button. Take a look at the meter on the transport panel (or click the monitor) to ensure the signal is coming through. Use the slider to adjust the SNR maximum without distortion. Finally, press the Record button to start and stop button to stop recording.
It's not all! Read and listen carefully track how it sounds. Do not be afraid to record multiple takes up that you are completely satisfied. Even professional record multiple takes. If fact, before even record your first track, you can copy and to create several duplicate tracks to record measurements to establish the tracks for multiple takes. You can also overdub, recording different sections separately to mix and edit later. For those who use Cubase, I discovered some cool video tutorials on the web rel = "nofollow" href = "http://www.maketunes.com/articles/cubase-tutorial-videos"> www.maketunes.com / articles / Cubase-tutorial-videos.
