Network Attached Storage
Networked Storage (NAS) is hard disk storage that is set up with its own network address rather than being attached to the department that serves applications to users on a network workstation. By removing storage access and managing the department server, both application programming and files can be served faster because they are not compete for CPU resources. The storage device connected to the network is connected to a LAN (typically Ethernet) and assign an IP address. File requests are mapped by the main server to the NAS file server.
A NAS device is a computer connected to a network that only provides file-based storage services data to other devices on the network. Although it may be technically possible to run other software on a NAS device, it is not designed to be a general purpose server. For example, NAS generally do not have a keyboard or screen, and are controlled and configured on the network, often using a browser.
An operating system fully featured is not needed on a NAS device, so often an operating system stripped-down is used. For example, FreeNAS, an open source NAS solution designed for PC hardware commodity, is implemented as a scaled down version of FreeBSD.
NAS systems contain one or more hard disks, often arranged into logical, redundant storage containers or RAID (redundant array of inexpensive / Independent Disks). NAS removes the responsibility of file serving from other servers on the network.
NAS uses protocols based on files such as NFS (popular on UNIX), SMB / CIFS (Server Message Block / Common Internet File System) (used with MS Windows systems) or AFP (used with Apple Macintosh computers). NAS units rarely limit clients to a single protocol.
NAS vs. SAN
NAS provides both storage and a file system. It is often contrasted with SAN (Storage Area Network), which provides only for block-based storage concerns and leaves filesystem on the "client" side. SAN protocols are SCSI, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, ATA over Ethernet (AoE), or HyperSCSI.
Despite their differences, SAN and NAS are not mutually exclusive and can be combined as a hybrid SAN-NAS, providing both file level protocols (NAS) and block level protocols (SAN) of the system. An example of this is Openfiler, a free software running on Linux.
The main difference between the DAS (direct attached) and NAS is that DAS is simply an extension to an existing server and is not networked, everything rests NAS on a network as a separate entity, it is easier to share files with NAS. Availability of data could potentially be increased with SIN if it combines the functions of RAID and clustering capabilities. Performance can be increased by NAS because the file serving is done by the NAS and not is not loaded by a server to another treatment also. The performance of NAS devices, however, strongly depends on the speed and traffic on the network and the amount of cache on the computers or NAS devices.
NAS protocols
Demand in two protocols most commonly associated with SIN Sun Network File System (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS). Both NFS and CIFS operate in client / server. The Both are pre-modernity NAS by many years, the original work on these protocols has taken place in the 1980s.
NFS was originally developed for sharing files between UNIX systems on a LAN. Support for NFS quickly extended to non-UNIX systems, but NFS most customers today are computers running some flavor of UNIX.
The CIFS was formerly known under the name of the server message block (SMB). SMB was developed by IBM and Microsoft to support the sharing of files in DOS. Since the protocol has been widely used in Windows, the name was changed to CIFS. This same protocol appears today in UNIX systems in the Samba package.
Many NAS systems also support Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Customers can often download files in their web browser from a NAS that supports HTTP. NAS systems also commonly employ HTTP as the access protocol for Web user interfaces for administration.
The new product generation of NAS was able to provide a reasonable alternative to traditional file servers in client / server networks. From entry-level NAS products containing 20-50 gigabytes of storage can be purchased for $ 500 (USD) or less, while medium range and high-end NAS systems can run into tens of thousands of dollars.
