Once my manager asked me to transfer huge data files (up to 300 GB) from the server externally USB 2.0 hard drive, it took me hours to complete the task successfully. The reason why the data must be transferred to an external drive because the data must be copied to the mirror server in Sydney. It was a remote site where the communication must be done by satellite. WAN link remote sites to link central satellite office use with a bandwidth of 512 Kbps.
Normally, we use the backup tape autoloader the system Central backup for all data servers. Autoloader tape backup solution is very advantageous for multi-server environment that reduces overhead and time spent by the administrator to maintain the backup system. I did not copy the data on backup tape, which should be easier and faster because the backup cartridge used on a remote site is not compatible with the mirror server in the seat. So, the solution is to transfer data at USB 2.0 external hard drive.
The maximum transfer rate of USB 2.0 data base is about 480 Mbps. In fact it is a transfer rate fast enough for home use. But for business environments where huge backup data and data transfer tasks frequently use USB external storage for some cases, the transfer rate up to 480 Mbps (using USB 2.0 based) is not fast enough to support your work to copy the data.
