How to upgrade hard drive of your laptop to a SSD (III)
Drive-cloning software
If you do not want to change the system operating, the easiest way to update your portable player is to use a drive cloning tool. That's how we conducted the exchange of training on our test machine.
Software that can make an exact copy bitwise disk partitions has been around for years. Utilities such as Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, and even the free Drive Image XML is extremely useful for backups, and for migrating hard drives.
For our example, we used Acronis True Image Home 2010, a $ 50 utility. We have long used the professional version of True Image to clone system disks.
You can use a disk cloning tool in one of two ways. The first method is to create a bootable CD, then boot from that CD and run the software to copy the disc. The second approach is to install the application in Windows, then clone the disk by running the software in Windows. We used the latter method because it does not require us to attach an external optical drive our netbook-class laptop.
Before we started cloning, we jumped in the Apex SSD drive dock and then plugged Thermaltake the power cord from the dock into the wall. Before starting the PC, we plugged a USB drive dock in one of the USB ports on the computer Cell. We then immediately, due to the USB drive to be recognized, and ran True Image.
Looking at the layout of the disk (as in the screenshot above), we knew we had to keep the recovery partition to 12 GB system partition to 102MB reserved. The primary partition was listed as 220.78GB, so he had to shrink. Fortunately, the laptop was a test relatively new system, so we only had about 22GB of actual data and applications on the hard drive, which means we do not have to move data out to make room.
We installed True Image Home 2010 on the portable test, then run the application and choose "Clone Disk.
When presented with the choice of drive cloning automatic or manual, we chose to use because we wanted manage how the three partitions have been cloned.
We then selected the source disc, which was the player from Toshiba with a capacity of 232.9GB list. You can see the layout drawn at the bottom of the screenshot here. As we had only two drives, the Apex OCZ has become the target drive.
Important Note: Make sure you choose the right target and destination drives. This is the part most dangerous of the whole process. If you choose incorrectly, you run the risk of copy on your installation, your OS and lose all your data!
In the next step, we chose what Acronis calls the "displacement method." As we wanted to keep the size of the partitions ourselves, we have chosen "as is". With True Image Home 2010, the choice is pretty smart: It's an exact replica of light partitions, including their size, but knows that the primary partition will be smaller, and that it resizes correctly. In earlier versions of True Image, you need to select "Manual" type and size of the partitions yourself.
We then clicked on "Next", and we were off and running - True Image conducted an audit record integrity, rebooted the system, and began to perform the cloning process in real DOS mode.
If you want, when you do cloning, you can watch the transfer process, as it happens. Or you can watch paint dry. We chose to return after finishing.
