Challenges for Ohio project's parking lot mall lighting

A small retail center in Ohio with a modest budget contacted RLLD commercial lighting looking for a parking lighting system that provides the lighting for parking customer, employee parking, and a drive through the area for a small restaurant. The garage itself was fairly small, so poles were be placed in a manner that does not follow that the space was available for customers of the mall. Lighting was intended primarily for general lighting without special considerations for light pollution or laws to be dark sky taken into account in the design. The owner of the mall had a limited budget and need a solution that would meet these requirements, without excessive costs.

Parking lot Lighting Design Considerations

Because the customer has a budget, it was not possible to recommend a separate set of timeframes for retail security. Lighting for the parking lot would meet minimum foot candle for both traffic and parking pedestrians and be distributed in such a way as to provide a bright, glare free even beneficial to safety. lighting detail the employee parking area behind the center should be done with the smallest number of poles and equipment possible in order to stay within budget the client. Enter a proposed retail lighting that respond to different levels of luminance is not the main challenge. The main challenge was done in a way to maximize the parking space, minimize glare and light pollution, and limit the amount of fixtures and poles for a number reasonable, the client could afford. Using a CAD sent to us by the owner of the mall, we modeled a number of variable lighting using our photometric measurement software. We experimented with variables such as number of units, types Supporters, post height, power, and optics. Finally, we reached a final proposal that was circulated 2-3 candles of light around parking lots of detail (both window and employee parking at the rear) and 5 foot-candles of light for the drive of restaurant through the area.

Final Parking Lot Lighting System Proposed

We chose the most effective material to draw the best use of a limited number of devices. In both the customer and employee parking areas, we used 25 'mounted on 3 posts, concrete bases. The bases have been proven for extra height for light poles and a buffer against accidental collisions. This provided the poles not only with resistance to shock, but a slightly higher elevation from which the spread provide a maximum width. We mounted Type V devices to give the widest possible dissemination of the beam (directed towards the interior of parking) and also provide security lighting for all parking lots and storefronts facing the parking lot. Crossing the lighting been done with the full cutoff wall packs to provide the desired luminance of 5 foot-candles with minimal light spill and glare.
