The two most recognizable names in the game, especially for the market desktop hard drive are Seagate and Western Digital. Both manufacturers have both been producing high quality hard disk storage since the late 1980s, and which one is the best record is an argument frequently advanced and still open question.
Until the recent advent of Solid State Drive (SSD), virtually all computers in the world contains a hard disk storage data, and more. All the information you access every day on the Internet are stored on the hard disk drives, most likely from either Seagate or Western Digital, although there are several other manufacturers with significant market share. Let's take a quick look at each:
Seagate - Based in the Cayman Islands, Seagate was founded in 1979 and produced the first industry player 5.25-inch drive in 1980. The form factor 5.25 inches is a standard at the beginning, later giving way to the standard 3.5 inches today. Always pushing the envelope for better, faster storage Seagate introduced the Barracuda, the first 7200 rpm in November 1992, and the Cheetah, the 10,000 rpm first album in October 1996.
Western Digital - Based in Lake Forest, California, was founded in 1970 and spent his early years as a manufacturer of semiconductor chips, mainly for calculators. In the 1980s, they moved into hard disk controllers, and in 1988 acquired the ability to produce the disk behaves Tandon, a manufacturer of PC hardware. In 1991, they introduced the Caviar line of hard drives, perhaps the brand of disc as known in the world.
