DVDRW is a re-writable version of the DVDR. This is a re-recordable format that is similar to the CDRW. This can be rewritten for about 1000 times. It can hold about 4.7 gigabytes of data or video. The content that is written in the disc can be erased and recorded several times without damaging the medium of it. The DVDs created by these devices can be used by most of the DVD-ROM players that are commercial.

The DVDRW disc can be used with Burners or multi-format recorders. It is also used in DVD+RW compatible Recorders. The DVDRW is used for backing up the volatile files that contain helpful information. This is an optical disc that is rewritable. It has a storage capacity that is equal to a DVD-R, having a capacity of 4.7 GB. Pioneer was the one that developed the format of the DVDRW, in November 1999. This was even, approved by the DVD forum. Unlike the DVD-RAM, these are 75% playable in most of the conventional DVD players. The smaller version of the DVDRW holds a capacity of 1.46 gigabytes, having a diameter of 8cm.

The basic advantage of the DVDRW over the DVDR is the ability that it has to erase and rewrite the content to a DVD-RW disc. According to the Pioneer, these discs can be written about 1000 times before you wish to replace them. This disc is commonly used to store the volatile data to store them as backups or keep them as collections of files. These are also used increasingly for home DVD video recorders. One advantage of using these rewritable DVDRW discs is that, even if there were errors while writing the disc, you can still record the data into it by erasing the errors. Hence, the disc is not ruined but rather used after erasing the faulty data.

One of the competing writable formats is the DVDRW. Hybrid drives are able to handle both, and they are labeled as DVD±RW. These are very popular because of the lack of single standard for DVDs that are recordable. The recording layer in the DVD+RW and DVD-RW are not an organic dye but rather a special phase change of metal alloy. The metal alloy often used is the GeSbTe. This alloy can be switched front and back between the amorphous and the crystalline phase by changing the reflectivity according to the power of the laser beam. Thus, you can write, erase and rewrite the data. The DVDRW dual layer that comes with 8.5 gigabytes capacity is approved by the DVD forum. Due to the advantages of the DVDRW, it can be used by several companies and firms that need a good storage capacity at a cheaper and durability.

It is a very common fact that while we write a disc to record our data, we cannot be right always. We do make mistakes and it has to be corrected that too, in cases of huge data storage. Perfection is impossible. This is why DVDRW is very useful and cash saving, sometimes.
