Leopard Geckos are one of the hardiest and easy-to-look after breeds of reptile. With appropriate care, your leo can live a long and happy life. However, you should be aware of some of the possible Leopard Gecko health issues that can occur. Generally these conditions are not common if your leo is properly looked after, however it is important to know what to do if your leo falls victim to one of the below issues.
Parasites
Parasites can occur internally and externally. Symptoms of internal parasites include loss of appetite, weight loss, and vomiting. Internal parasites need treatment by your veterinarian.
External parasites or mites are tiny and difficult to spot. They suck your leos blood, weakening his immune system, making him lethargic and causing him to lose his appetite. Because of the severity of these mites, if you suspect or find them you must work quickly. Thoroughly wash your leo, and put him in a separate tank while you spring clean his home. Soak the tank in a bleach solution for up to 24 hours, thoroughly rinse and dry, leaving it to air out. Replace the substrate, and dispose of any live plants. Any fake rocks or plants need sterilizing.
Respiratory Infections
Respiratory infection is often a result or your enclosure being to cold or humidity levels being too high. When leo is too cold, his immunity is jeopardised making him more susceptible to respiratory infection. Often there are not always obvious symptoms. Your leo could show signs of distress, or may appear to be panting a lot. Fortunately, this illness is easily fixed by checking and raising the temperature of you enclosure.
Mouth Infections
Mouth infections will never occur in healthy, well cared for leos. This infection is associated with bad care, and dirty living conditions. Symptoms include a swollen mouth, loss of appetite or bleeding gums. It is very a painful condition that is preventable by making sure your enclosure is kept clean and at the right temperature. Mouth infections can also be caused by fighting, so it is also important that your enclosure is not over crowded.
Metabolic Bone Disease
Metabolic bone disease is a calcium deficiency. Although uncommon, symptoms include, sluggishness, painful and swollen joints and weak jaws. This disease is easily curable and also preventable. All you have to do is make sure your leo is getting his necessary supplements, most importantly calcium.

As leopard geckos are generally strong healthy pets it is more than likely your leo will never be troubled by any of these ailments.
