External Hard Drives
An external hard drive is a great piece of equipment to have when it comes to using a computer; this is because an external hard drive can be used to store all of your important information such as documents, data, programs, music, videos and pictures. With the growing amount of hackers and virus writers on currently lurking about the Internet, the amount of viruses have grown tremendously. One virus could potentially decimate your entire computer, meaning all of your important information could be lost or deleted. If you have an external hard drive however, all of this information is safely stored and kept out of reach of harmful viruses.
There are many different types of external hard drives. Traditional external hard drives are sometimes referred to as desktop hard drives because they are usually pretty large due to the large protective cases that encompass them as well as the large storage capacity. Some of these external hard drives can hold small amounts around four to eight gigabytes while some can hold massive amounts such as one or more terabytes. The amount of storage capacity will show in the price because typically, the more memory you are getting, the higher the price tag will be.
There has also been a growth in popularity in portable external hard drives. A portable external hard drive is basically the same thing as a desktop external hard drive with the exception being that the portable external hard drive is significantly smaller in size. Do not let the size fool you though, portable external hard drives can hold just as much as some of the desktop external hard drives thanks in part to new technologies being developed that can reduce the size but maintain the performance. Plus, you can carry a portable external hard drive safely concealed in your pocked, briefcase or purse where nobody can steal your information. A desktop external hard drive can be moved as well, just not as easily as a portable external hard drive.
There are also many different features associated with some types of external hard drives. Some external hard drives are connected via a USB cable which can come in handy since most modern computers and laptops boast at least one USB port. Other external hard drives usually connect via a Firewire port which is also pretty popular, just nowhere near as popular as a USB connectable external hard drive. Some External hard drive have added security features such as being password protected, with some even requiring a fingerprint identification to access the information. Then you have the style factor because there are a lot of external hard drives that simply look better than others which can sometimes be important if you like to stay stylish.
Regardless of whether you have a desktop external hard drive, a portable external hard drive or whatever, you should always have some kind of device to back up all of your important information such as documents, music, data, videos and pictures. If a virus were to get on your computer and wipe out all of your information, you will feel safe knowing that you can restore all of that information because you have it stored safely on an external hard drive.
