You would think that becoming a DJ is an easy path to fame, riches and an excellent career. However, there are thousands of people who are all thinking the same thing and also want to be DJs and you will have to be good to rise to the top of the pack. You will also need to be dedicated, very hard working and good a promoting yourself too if you want to get noticed.
A gig is a gig! Never turn down any gig, no matter what kind of music it is. There are many DJs who will refuse to play to certain crowds or play certain types of music. Make sure that is not you! Getting paid work playing music to any kind of crowd is still good for business and will also help raise your confidence too. Everyone makes mistakes and it is all part of growing as a DJ, so don't worry about it. You will be gaining valuable experience and tips on how to best run your sets and work with your equipment. Anyway, would you rather mess up playing a set at a 16 year olds party, or at your first big gig as a DJ? I know which one I would choose. The more confident you become, the better you will get.
What did I say at the beginning of this article? You must be flexible and able to play any kind of gig.Make sure you are available to play to any type of crowd. Until you are really good and well known, sticking with one single genre of music will not be a good thing if you want to earn money. Get gigs that will pay your bills as often as you can. After you become more well known and popular, you can choose which ones you want to.
Getting noticed and promoting yourself will take lots of work. This is also one of the things that most DJs fail at, which causes them to give up their dream. Knowing how, when and where to promote your DJ skills is as important as being able to play records and make people dance. You might be the best DJ in the world, but if people have not heard of you, then you are nothing.
Luckily, self promotion is quite easy when you know how. Get yourself a website, upload some video and audio recordings of you in action. Make a page on MySpace and Facebook and start asking friends and family to "like" and "share" your information. You don't have to be brilliant at making sites, just good enough to say who you are, what you do and how to get in contact with you. The big, flashy websites come later. Try making some mixes and then uploading them to your Myspace and Facebook pages. Also, when writing on your website, ensure that you mention the town where you live, the local area name and list any gigs you have done too. This will help Google and other search engines know where you are and it will get you more local gigs.
When it comes to wages, fees and money, you will need to be sensible. At the beginning, you may not be working every night, so make sure you keep some money in reserve for times when you can't get a gig. I know saving money is boring but it is something you should consider. Treat it like a business and invest some in new records and equipment and save some for later.
When you are a DJ, you are legally self employed. Paying income tax is part of the responsibilities that come with this status, so take note. If you don't pay tax, or try to get round the fact that you have to pay - you run the risk of legal action against you. Once you get more popular, find an accountant who will be able to take care of the money side of things for you. After all, you are interested in playing music, not filling in tax returns!
Will you make it as a DJ? IS there room in the market for yet another budding bedroom musician? The truth is that the majority of DJs never get past playing local gigs. Even if you are the best DJ and mixer in the world, unless you concentrate on self promotion, getting noticed will be almost impossible. Many DJs fail and give up within the first year if a continuous run of gigs don't come.
You will have to be prepared to realise that making it in this industry is very difficult. With hard work, determination, acceptance that there will be good times and bad and that it all takes time to get what you want, you will be on your way to being a DJ.

Gig $14.99 “Amazing . . . a gem of a book that uses only the strength of the human voice to tell an American story -- sometimes dark, always fascinating.” -- USA Today “The accounts are wonderfully revealing, with gritty and almost shockingly honest detail. For all their variety, they weave a cohesive, passion-filled story of what people bring to their work. It's an addictive read.” -- Harvard Business Review's Best Business Books of 2000 “Keen, disturbing, and deeply felt . . . the stories in Gig deliver a more rousing political wallop than those in Working . . . remarkable and strangely moving.” -- Susan Faludi, The Village Voice “I love this book! It's surprising and entertaining and makes the world seem like a bigger and more interesting place. Gig manages to document everyday life and give pure narrative pleasure at the same time. One feels proud to live in the same country as the people in this book.” -- Ira Glass, host of This American Life “A fascinating compilation of what the American workforce has to say about itself.” -- George Plimpton “Eye-opening . . . more revealing than any theories a sociologist could concoct.” -- The Industry Standard “Entertaining, sobering, validating . . . Ordinary people discuss their jobs with extraordinary candor.” -- US Weekly “In the age of advanced spin, this book accomplishes a very rare thing. It actually lets workers speak for themselves. . . . The result makes for a fascinating read.” -- Andrew Ross, director, American Studies Program at New York University “Emotional and eye-opening, each compelling description offers insight about the job itself and, more important, an intimate view of a single human life.” -- Austin Chronicle “An engaging, humorous, revealing, and refreshingly human look at the bizarre, life-threatening, and delightfully humdrum exploits of everyone from sports heroes to sex workers.” -- Douglas Rushkoff, author of Coercion , Ecstasy Club , and Media Virus From the Trade Paperback edition. |
