Icy Dock

I was thinking of things I like.

One thing I really love is how we can learn from history.
But rarely the case.

It could be a reason.
Often, the lesson is so obvious (now, for us, years after the event), we can not understand why nobody thought at the time, if we do not think it's important.
We underestimate the importance of the lesson, and ignore it.

A good example is how the Titanic sank.

Anyone saw the film know that the Titanic, the largest vessel of its time and the biggest passenger liner in the world until this point, was sailing across the Atlantic and in the middle of the night, struck an iceberg. It caused a massive slash on one side of the ship, the water flooded in, and cast coating in an hour and a half.
Most of the passengers died, mainly because there were not enough lifeboats for everybody, and even those who were there, could not all be launched safely, (the ship began listing to one side).
So it that, right?
More than half of the passengers drowned.
Nothing could be done.

Well, James Cameron does not think so.

He is the director of famous film.
He made a special study of the event. Dammit, it's been in a submarine to examine the wreckage.
He said in a recent television documentary, that people could have been saved.

How?
Well, the ship struck the iceberg and the engines stopped. But they were still working.
If the boat had attempted to advance, it would have forced water into the hole in the hull, and it sank quickly.
But he could go back.
For some time.

Captain knew there was another ship about ten miles behind, parked for the night. He could have slammed the Titanic in reverse and back to steam within earshot of the other boat. Then the passengers could have been ferried across in the lifeboats they had some work.
Why did not he do?
Maybe he did not believe him.
Maybe he was so paralyzed by fear and fear, he could not think at all.
After all, the Titanic was described as "unsinkable." It was equipped with partitions sealed, so that any leak would have been contained. (But, unfortunately for these guys in 1912, the iceberg had caused a gash in the vessel spent several of these sections, and once one of them filled, the water was overflowing - from the watertight bulkheads did not go all the way through the boat. They stopped after a few decks below!)

If you saw the movie, you will have seen the captain looked a little depressed.
It probably correct.
Once he made up his mind that the ship would sink, he stayed around and was feeling miserable, until the last minute.

Unfortunately for him, there was another way out too.

James Cameron said in his television program, "they could have landed people on the iceberg.
It looks fantastic, too stupid to be true, but as he points out, the vessel could have re-started the engines and slightly increased for the iceberg, which, as he says "getting nowhere". It would have been easy, he said at the boat dock and bind with ropes. Then, using the masts and cranes that the ship had, they might have missed on the ice bridges and people could have simply crossed over something solid.
They should have Dress warmly, of course, and take a bit of carpet to sit with them, but there was a good chance, "said Cameron, that the passengers could sit outside at night, at least until the rescue ship arrived in the morning.

So simple.
Why did not they think?

Aw, common, to be honest. Would you?
The iceberg damn had just cut a hole in your ship and was the most on the boat and doom of the population living there. Would you have liked to cozy up to the mountain ice and risking the lives of the population, slipping on ice and snow?
Well, yes, if there was no alternative, and the only other choice was to jump into the icy waters. (If you saw the movie, you would have seen it -. Why Why on earth people choose to try swimming, particularly at temperatures below zero? Because they had no other choice, not right now!)

What can we learn?

Well, if the crew of the Titanic did not think that the iceberg that caused all their problems could also have been the thing that could have save, could we?
Suppose you've dismissed by your employer and were dismissed. Would you return to them and offer to work as a consultant independent? Would you like to cuddle the iceberg?

The point is this.
The Titanic sank. People would drown. What could they do?
The answer, says the director, was right in front of them.
They did not see it.
Well, well, well.
How many times we they say - "Thinking outside the box '.
Wait, why not look inside the box first?
The answer might be there, staring back at you.
