Owning a notebook has its downside. Oftentimes, you may find yourself with the need to change or upgrade your notebook hard disk. The status of the hard disk from your notebook will greatly affect the performance of your mini-computer. Take note that the notebook speed to process the running programs and applications are relatively slow compared to that of a desktop.
The hard disk from a notebook requires a constant upgrade. Some use an external disk from their laptop. It allows them to enjoy more programs and storage ability when using it than exclusively relying on the internal hard disk of their mobile computer.
Commonly, notebook disks are available in a couple of types namely the 2.5" and 1.8". The latter is hardly available in retails stores however since they are only used in ultraportable notebooks such as from Fujitsu, Thinkpad ultraportable by Sony. They are not easily upgradable. The 2.5" is commonly used in majority of notebook units and are readily available in the market.
The notebook hard disk connects to the computer through either an IDE or Serial ATA connectors. About 90% of notebooks use the IDE connectors and is widely available in most computer shops. You may know which connector your notebook is using by checking the drive if there is a two row grid of pinholes. This indicates you have an IDE.
In order to optimize the performance of your notebook, you shoulder prefer getting a laptop with 2.5" hard disk on your internal drive with an IDE connector. You should also get one with a fast speed of 7200rpm. However this will make your drive produce more heat than running a drive at a lower speed. Higher speed laptops usually are expensive. This is the extra price to pay for owning a more efficient and fast performing mobile computer.
A friend recommends the following brands for a more efficient laptop at a high performance: Toshiba, Dell, Fujitsu, Seagate, Western Digital, and Hitachi. You must also keep in mind precautions to observe when installing a hard disk drive on your laptop. For safety purpose, it is suggested to keep a back up files of your documents and programs to a CD before installation of your disk drive. The performance of your notebook will depend on the specification of your hard drive so it is best to asses your needs before choosing a hard disk to install in your notebook. If you will be using many programs often, then it is wise to buy a fast running drive for the notebook's optimal performance.
