Internal hemorrhoids develop when one or more of the sacs of blood vessels inside the rectum becomes inflamed and swollen. This is different from the external variety because it refers only to the sacs of veins existing inside the rectum, not those around the anus outside the body. There are different symptoms between the two forms, although both can cause pain and itching.
The biggest difference between an external or an internal hemorrhoid is that most often the latter is only visible to the eye when it becomes so inflamed that it pushes outside of the body, which does not always happen. If it does, it may be possible to push it back in, but sometimes it swells to such size that other treatment is necessary before it will recede back into the body.
Because they are usually not visible to the eye except in more extreme cases, internal hemorrhoids can be harder to diagnose. You may wish to have a rectal exam to determine your condition as the pain and itching one may experience can possibly be caused by other conditions. However if one does have them often times they will burst during a harder bowel movement and like external hemorrhoids they will bleed. One may wish to consult a doctor if they suspect they may have an internal hemorrhoid but cannot tell for sure.
Treatment for this condition can range from surgery to herbal remedies, medication, nutritional changes, suppositories, or all of the above. Each person of course must decide for himself or herself how they wish to treat their hemorrhoids.
In the case of medications, often the ingredients work to soothe pain, shrink the swollen tissue and act as an anti-inflammatory. Oftentimes the ingredients in such medications, which can be very expensive, include natural products that can be acquired for less or without the worry of "what else is in them".
Many people who suffer from the common affliction of internal hemorrhoids prefer this natural path because they find it less abrasive to their system, while also effective. Herbal remedies have been around for years and come from all over. Some popular herbal remedies include butchers broom, cayenne pepper, vitamin e, or sulfur, and you can even get oriental remedies that come in tea form and include ingredients like myrrh, pomegranate fruit and mastic. One of the best topical treatments is witch hazel, which is used in many over the counter hemorrhoid medications.
Another option includes different types of surgery to shrink or remove internal hemorrhoids. These more conventional methods can mean high costs, lots of missed work, a long healing process as well as discomfort. There are newer methods that range from infrared treatments or electro shock waves that have recently proven effective and can lower the undesirable aspects of surgical removal. Combined with a modification in your diet that increases fiber and helps to keep stool soft along with exercise and hydration, these new alternatives can be more attractive, especially because the treatments like laser removal or methods that use voltage are outpatient procedures and don't interrupt much from your routine.
Of course the best way to avoid internal hemorrhoids lies in prevention. As mentioned just above, a modification of lifestyle can be the best way to do this. As constipation and hard bowel movements are some of the most common causes of this condition, your diet and practices can help you keep fit. However, there are other cases that occur regularly during pregnancy or prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
This is because hemorrhoids are the result of too much pressure on the tissues surrounding the anus or, in the case of an internal hemorrhoid, the rectal lining. Anything you do to prevent chronic strain or pressure in these areas, along with a healthy diet and exercise, can help you to avoid the painful condition of hemorrhoids.
