What do you need to know to secure your VoIP plan against attack? Has this technology been deployed before there are adequate safeguards? What potential pitfalls should you be aware of before you set up a VoIP plan for your home or business?

Voice over Internet Protocol is a technology which allows us to make phone calls which are carried over a broadband internet connection. Since calls made over the internet are not taxed, VoIP plan calls are significantly less expensive than service from a traditional telephone service company.

Vulnerabilities in your VoIP plan

VoIP connections can be a nightmare to provide security for, as they may combine the most vulnerable aspects of both computer networks and telephone networks. You just need to be aware of the issues and choose a plan which provides security for these weak points.

The three weaknesses in VoIP plan security:

* Authentication failure - There is an authentication standard for internet devices, but most VoIP devices currently do not support it well, if at all. There are some "QoS" and "roaming" applications which will allow to set up a media access control-based security system, although this can be complicated.

* Integrity failure - The physical network must be made secure, so that unauthorized persons cannot plug a computer into an open Ethernet socket, or gain access to an unsecured wireless connection.

* Privacy failure - the average corporate VoIP plan does not provide for the calls to be encrypted before being sent over public internet connection, so someone with the right knowledge and equipment could listen to or record your phone conversations. Look for plans that provide encryption, via SSL or otherwise, and learn how to secure the portions of your network infrastructure that are vulnerable to tapping.

Try to find an expert to to help you secure your VoIP plan, preferably before the system goes live. Setting up proper security is not a simple process and missing one of the above points of weakness can leave you open to identity theft, invasion of privacy, or denial-of-service attacks. With a little forethought, you CAN provide a secure VoIP plan for your business. Just do your research before taking the plunge into switching to VoIP technology.

Note that While businesses have a corporate responsibility to worry about the security of their VoIP plan, the average home user generally doesn't need to take extraordinary steps, as their systems are better hidden in the forest of connections, and since conversations are more likely to be mundane family chatter, without useful personal information, they are less likely to be the target of hackers.

Remember that the traditional phone lines are no safer from tapping or intrusion, and the techniques are not difficult for a criminal to learn. We are hearing more in the news about who is monitoring our calls every day.
