The first Android OS from Sony Ericsson's Xperia line finally gets official confirmation but its designation jumps all the way up from X3 to X10, most likely avoiding confusion from the recently released Nokia X3. That's just fine. There's no surprising upgrade to the feature set and it's essentially everything we expected from the X3, now officially the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 - the new the patriarch smartphone in Sony's emerging Xperia series on the Android platform.
Improving on the Android
Against a strategy of going multi-platform for its smartphone portfolio that now includes Windows and its traditional Symbian OS, Sony took advantage of the open architecture of the Android 1.6 OS to give it the unique Sony Ericsson signature features that make for a top-of-the-line versatility we expect from a flagship smartphone. Earlier known as Rachel in its development stage, the tweaked Android 1.6 operating system is now called UX - short for "User's eXperience."
Sony still has to refine its enhanced Android OS as reports of lagging responsiveness hounds initial hands-on tests. Battery life still needs some improvement. It uses the same 1500mAh battery of the X2 but can't remain untethered to the charger for long. And we hope to see multitouch features on the massive capacitive display which are inexcusably absent in the sample specimen we played around with.
But if the few stable aspects of the handset were any indication, the X10 is really the smartphone to look forward to. Google Maps and its WebKit default internet browser are the most stable function with smooth scrolling and fast web page rendering. There are features like Timescape, integrating all the communication functions like text, phone and instant messaging as well as social networking sites in one app which the user can filter by site or by person. There's Mediascape which does the same thing for entertainment apps. Lastly, the OS automates calling by just tapping on a face in a photo using face recognition on a photo-tagged image.
Flagship Features
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will have the 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor making it one of the most powerful handsets in the market. The announced new Android phone is essentially the same as the speculated Xperia X3 which has the following upscale features. It is a Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a Dual-Band 3G with HSDPA and HSUPA on a slim but wide monoblock touchscreen form dominated by a huge 4" Wide-VGA capacitive touchscreen.
It sports an upscale 8.1-megapixel autofocusing camera with LED flash, image stabilization, 8x digital zoom, face/smile recognition and VGA video recording. Then there's the usual support for Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi 802.11b/g, micro SDHC memory slot support and presumably should go as high as 16 GB and GPS/A-GPS navigation application built-in
Availability
Sony Ericsson has yet to formally launch the handset in the markets it hopes to target the new Xperia 10 but initial photo and technical information leaking online reveal that some OS bugs remain and points to the first quarter of 2010 as a more likely period to launch it. So for Android fans looking to Sony to deliver the smartphone they want, it's just a matter of a few more months of patience.
