Two days ago, my friend's computer was broken and she turned to me. I checked the computer for her, and I found it had problems as followings: the screen was blank at start, and the small speaker in her host computer had no exceptional alarm.

Then I fell to fixing the failures for her.

First, I tried to boot up the computer, but strangely I could not hear a "tick" sound for POST (Power on Self Test).

Second, I restarted her computer and entered the BIOS to find the cause. There I knew it was an AMI motherboard, and according to its specifications, that was normal for an AMI motherboard start without any audio prompt. The only thing I could hear was the computer fan spinning, but why there was no signal being sent to the monitor?

Then three, I wondered whether the pin in the slot that connected to the video data cable was broken. I scrutinized the pin but it had no malfunction.

Four, according to the common troubleshooting thinking, I changed a trouble-free memory bank into this computer and then restarted. However, the screen was still blank. What did the matter with this machine?

Five, I thought to the CPU, because the problem CPU also could make the computer no display. Generally if the CPU was damaged, it would have an alarm, but there was no alarm at all. Just in case, I took off the CPU and checked, as the same everything was normal there.

Six, I went through this computer again. For the video card and the sound card were both integrated on the motherboard, maybe it was the problem video card that gave rise to this trouble. If so, we had to change the motherboard. Then I changed my good motherboard to my friend's computer, however, the blank screen was still hanging there.

Finally, I thought to the network card, which was the only thing left I had not checked. So I took off the card and restarted the computer. Immediately my friend shouted excitedly: "Bravo! The signal is back!" Really, the monitor light that was in yellow a few seconds ago changed to be in green, and then the Windows start-up screen was following. It appeared that the network card was the culprit. Then I cleaned the network card, reinserted it into the motherboard slot and boot up the computer, eventually the conk out was totally fixed. It was the poor contact between the net card and its slot due to this blank screen.
