Choosing the right external hard drive for yourself
There is no doubt that an external hard drive has many benefits but you need to know which one to buy. It should be the one you suits your needs and gives value for money.
Any computer-user needs an external hard drive to store songs, movies and photographs of family and friends. Apart from that, important files and data can be stored so that in case the internal hard drive crashes, you do not lose your important data. These days, viruses are a common problem with computers being affected every now and then and crashing down. Despite the best anti-virus software, people face problems of viruses. Hence, all important data can be protected on an external hard drive.
External hard drives come in different sizes ranging from 100GB (gigabytes) to 4TB (terabytes). Choosing an external hard drive depends on the amount of data you wish to store on it. If it is just important files, songs, few movies and photographs, then an external hard drive of 100GB is sufficient. In case you wish to take a complete back up of all files and the internal hard drive, then you need to go for a bigger hard drive. You can total up the size of the C: folder, the Documents folder and Pictures folder and accordingly decide the size of the external hard drive. If you wish to secure your needs for a long time, then you can go in for a bigger size like a 500GB hard drive or maybe even more. Then you do not have to bother about data storage space for a long period of time.
As regards the price, the price is obviously higher as the size of the external hard drive gets bigger. Always check out on different reputed and reliable websites and compare prices before finalising the deal. If you buy a bigger sized hard drive, it will be cheaper (when you compare the price per GB) than a smaller sized hard drive. So, it is profitable to go in for a bigger sized hard drive if you have big needs and are thinking of storing data for a long period of time.
There are three kinds of connectors for external hard drives. USB 2.0, SATA and Fire Wire and the three connectors. The commonly used connector is USB. However, SATA and Fire Wire are better in terms of speed and performance than USB. The speed of SATA is 6 times faster as compared to Fire Wire.
