One can count external hard drives is such a hard disk drive which remains connected with the pc with the aid of usb cable and many other ways.   Now in the market one can find that there are many modern things available counting standard such as sata, ide, scsi hard drives in a protable disk enclosures along with scsi, usb, ieee 1394 firewire, esata client interfaces which helps in connecting with the host computer.

At the end of 20th century internal drives were favorite for getting used in windows but external hard drives remained famous for getting used on apple macintosh and professional workstations offering external scsi ports.   Apple found these interfaces by default in the late 90's.   Once the usb and firewire interfaces get attached with personal Pcs made these drives commonly found in the computer market.  As a result these interfaces gave birth to complex and expensive scsi interfaces which helps in standardization nad price lessening for many external hard drives.

Now one should know that modern external hard drives beoming more compatible with evey kind of operating systems backing the important interface standards they are functioning withlike usb msc and ieee 1394.  not only this all these standards have the backing of modern server and desktop operating systems along with embedded devices.   In the same way external hard drives maintain the platters and rotational heads of traditional hard drives .  

These externalhard drives are less capable of tolerating physical shocks in comparison to flash based technology.  Many external hard drives have a look of compact body which are comfortably usable.  It also adds additional space to one's computer making large files carriable while one is on journey.
