Here we are looking at removable memory cards that are suitable for most digital cameras. They store your pictures on your camera which can then be uploaded to your computer. They are durable pieces of equipment and are highly reliable. MMC
The Multi Media Card (MMC) was the industry standard for portable flash memory cards, is about the size of a postage stamp and 1.4mm thick. The MMC is available in capacities of 128MB, 256MB and 512MB and has a slow data transfer speed of 2.5MB/second.
MMC Plus
A Multi Media Plus (MMC Plus) is an improved version of the MMC and has a 1GB storage capacity and has a much faster data transfer speed. The 128MB-1GB capacity card transfers data at the speed of 6MB/second whilst the 2GB capacity one transfers data at the speed of 11MB/second.
HC MMC Plus
A High Capacity Multi Media card (HC MMC plus) is an improved version of the MMC Plus. It also has copyright and data protection. They have a 32GB capacity and operate at speeds of up to 25MB/second.
SD
Secure Digital (SD) superceded the MMC giving a greater storage capacity of up to 4GB and higher data transfer speeds of 6MB/second. They have the same dimensions as the MMC but are thicker at 2.1mm. You may find it more convenient to buy two 2GB cards rather than one 4GB.
SDHC
Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) is the advanced version of the SD card. They have the same dimensions as the MMC and SD and are available in different capacities 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. As well as having a greater capacity than the SD, the SDHC memory cards are capable of a higher speed of data transfer. They can also protect copyright content through Digital Rights Management. There is a switch on the card which when moved into the correct position, locks the card and data cannot be lost or erased until the owner unlocks it.
Therefore we can see that there are several choices of memory card suitable for a digital camera. At the moment SD/SDHC cards tend to be more popular. Each type can be used interchangeably providing the slot in the camera is large enough to accommodate the SD/SDHC card.
