This device offers a smooth touch, with its velvety overlay, and its curves make it appear as a piece of art on your desk. With the SimpleTech Signature Mini (320GB, red), you not only get a local backup device, but one that synchronizes your data online as well.

The size of the Signature Mini (320GB, red) is very compact at 4.9 inches x 3.1 inches x 0.7 inches - in diameter - and it only weighs 5.7 ounces. The size, along with the velvet material surrounding the unit, makes this unit easy to grip and maneuver. The sticker price, on the Signature Mini (320GB, red), is much less than that of a Ferrari, usually found at around $199.99. The overall read / write speed, on this unit, is about average - in comparison with other USB external drives that is, (many external drives now offer FireWire connectivity, which has a much faster rate of read / write).

A USB 2.0 "Y" cable is all that this unit needs for power - on most computers. You can typically use one of the USB connectors, for sufficient power; however, both cables could be needed at different times (all dependent on the PC and the amount of data being transferred).

With this device, you not only have access to local backups, but online backups as well (with 128-bit SSL encryption). The online service allows for up 2GB of storage, free, with an option to purchase additional storage space. The local backups run effortlessly, behind the scenes, if you take advantage of the automated processes that can be set up. The Signature Mini (320GB, red) external drive also allows users to burn backup files, audio, and video to CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray disc. Additionally, this unit offers content management software called Joggle? - making sharing and organization as easy as a couple of clicks.

The Signature Mini (320GB, red) arrives formatted for Windows and Vista. This does not mean; however, that the drive is not compatible with MAC computers. If you are using a MAC, you will need to reformat the drive prior to use.

Older computers, with USB 1.1, will not provide power to the Signature Mini, and some laptops do not provide enough power. When using this device on older computers, and some laptops, you will need to purchase an AC adapter (remember, the unit does not come with one). Additionally, while one USB 2.0 connection is typically sufficient, there are times you will need to plug in both of the connectors from your "Y" cable.

The Signature Mini comes with a predefined list of file types that it will accept. Unfortunately, these file types do not include many newer file types like .docx (MS Word 2007). Additional file types can be added, as needed, but existing file types cannot be changed.

The overall design and build - of this unit - offers users with an unobtrusive drive that is easy to travel with. The online backup service, Joggle, and the ability to burn CD's, DVD's, and Blu-Ray discs, are excellent functionalities for an external drive. However, the lack of encryption, locally, may make this unit insufficient for local backups of your data.
