We are still a few years out from having portable virtual computers, but we are getting closer. Today, ultra slim is in! Some of the newer ultra slim laptops on the market today are very thin indeed. In the world of laptop computers thin can't be the only measure you are looking at. The machine is not going to be worth much if it only lasts 30 minutes on battery or if it doesn't have the power to do what you want it to do. Granted, people are willing to sacrifice optical drives for the portability factor, but there are some things that people don't want to do without.

It is nearly impossible to talk about ultra slim laptops without mentioning the Apple Macbook Air. This is a laptop that at its thickest point is just a tiny fraction beyond three-quarters of an inch and weighs in at a slight 3.0 pounds! It does not get much slimmer than this! The Air does sacrifice an optical drive, but not much else. Using an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and coming with a standard of 2 gigs of DDR3 Ram, this little puppy screams speed! The touch pad has come of age in the air as well, utilizing the gesture sensitive motions made popular on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod's. It's hard to beat the Macbook Air, Apple should be very pleased with this machine, and you will be too.

Next in line is the Toshiba Portege R700. This laptop is amazing, simple design with high quality components. It weighs in just a bit more than the Macbook Air and measures a solid one inch in thickness, but the kicker is a surprise...it includes a DVD drive! Toshiba is really coming on strong trying to compete in the ultra slim market and does an outstanding job as well. This Portege weighs more than the R600 but has a bit more to offer in the way of features. If you are a business traveler that needs powerful computing in a lightweight package, then Toshiba has the laptop for you.

While there are other ultra slim laptops on the market, as a rule, the two listed are at the top of the pack. You decision will probably be made from a combination of Mac vs Windows and price tag. Either way you go in this race you can only be a winner.
