The selection of a computer case or the chassis plays a vital part when it comes to assembling a computer on your own. The computer case helps shelter the vital computer components and also accounts for the performance of the computer. The choice of the case size also matters, since it decides the PC components that would fit inside.

ThePC components include expansion card, fans, internal drives, RAM, motherboard, power supply and the processor. The computer cases come in several variations. The desktop cases are designed to be placed on top of the desk in order to provide a spacious desk area. Another variation is the slimline case which is also designed specifically for places with space constraint.

Another variant of computer cases are the tower cases, which are usually used for computers that need to kept on the floor or placed on top of a computer desk. These tower cases are classified as mini-size, mid-size and full-size tower cases, depending on the height of the tower and the specific number of the internal drive bays present inside.

The mini-sized tower case is slightly bigger than the desktop cases and they come with 3 internal drive bays. On the other hand, mid-sized tower cases are bigger than the mini-sized ones and have 4 internal drive bays with equal number of external bays. They suit any type of computer and hence are used widely across the world. Full-sized tower cases are huge and have of internal drive bays ranging from 6 to 10 with equal number of external drive bays. To a great extent a motherboard affects the type of case that has to be used. Some of the common and efficient types of motherboards that are compatible with most cases are E-ATX, Micro-ATX, ATX and Mini-ITX.
