A decade ago, laptops did not have Wi-Fi. Their screens were typically around 13 inches and a hard drive was around a whopping 6 gigabytes. Today, one does not need to be tethered to a cord in the wall to access the internet from their laptop. Screen sizes commonly run between 15 and 17 inches and hard drives are often 500 gigabytes or bigger.
So, what are some laptop features we can look for in the future? Faster processing is a given but probably the biggest change in the computer laptop industry will be the conversion from spinning disk hard drives to solid state drives. These drives are currently in high-end machines but soon they will be main stream. The end result will be a much more quiet, low powered, faster, and durable product. Ten years ago, there was the common 6 gigabyte hard drive. Today, one can plug a portable fifteen dollar 8 gigabyte USB stick into their laptop. Five years from now, it is expected that laptops will have 2 terabyte solid state drives built-in.
The trend will also continue to move totally away from internal mechanical moving parts. So, look for CD-ROM drive to join the floppy disc drive in the computer antique museum. I would expect future software and movies to only be delivered through the internet or physically by USB thumb drives.
Tomorrow's laptop will have added durability in its casing. Scientists at UCLA are actually developing a strong epoxy called Automend which will be extremely easy to repair. Dropping a laptop today usually has detrimental results. In the future, Automend will allow small cracks in the casing to be sealed using a warm hair dryer.
The one thing that will still probably hinder the laptop industry is battery life. This has been an elusive problem for many years. Battery technologies such as inductive charging will help but there still needs to be a major breakthrough in research to allow laptops to fully evolve to the next level.
