Using Gas Rebate Cards to Cut your Gas Bill

Gas rebate cards are becoming more and more popular with today’s unpredictable gas prices and our dependency on gas driven cars. Gas rebate cards can save you money and actually cut your gas bill.

Gas rebate credit cards are different from other reward cards in that the rebate is applied directly to your credit card statement every month. You have no choice of reward, point level to earn, form to fill out or requests to be asked to receive your reward. Just by using the card as defined in the terms you earn your rebate.

The average rebate is 3%. To receive a higher percentage savings, consider the introductory periods that are offered by some cards which offer up to 10% such as with a Chase BP Visa® Rewards Card. With this card you get a generous 10% rebate on all BP purchases for the first 2 months and 1% on all other purchases.

There are two types of gas rebate cards:

Specific Gas Station Cards

If you are a loyal customer to one particular gas company, using one of their gas cards would be the way to go. Teaming with a major credit card company, you can purchase gas and merchandise from their gas stations to earn your rebate. The card will carry the Mastercard or Visa logo and be valid for not only gas station purchases but any purchases you can make with a standard credit card. However, you will only earn gas rebates at the specific gas station that issues the card. The downside of a specific gas station card is that you may not be getting the best value for your money at the pump, if you are compromising your ability to bargain hunt alternate gas stations.

Credit Card Company Gas Cards
The major credit card companies have jumped on the bandwagon and offer their own version of a gas rebate card. The big advantage of this type of card is that all of your purchases are applied to your rebate. They have a tiered point system with more value given to purchases made at select locations including gas stations and lesser value on all your other purchases. For example: The Citi® Diamond Preferred® Rewards Card earns you 5 points for every $1 spent on purchases at select locations including select gas stations and 1 point for every $1 on all other purchases.

Consider all your Options
Gas rebate cards can carry a hefty interest rate of 15% or higher. To make the rebate worth you while, you need to be able to pay the balance off each month. You’ll negate the reward if you pay the interest on the balance month after month. In which case, you should consider finding a standard card with a lower APR.
