The most difficult aspect of lacrosse is learning to run while cradling the ball in your crosse (stick). How to play some sports is almost intuitive - run, jump, kick, throw - but in lacrosse, the ball literally hangs in the balance. The only way to become better at cradling a lacrosse ball is through practice, practice, practice!
Here's a drill you can run with your team to better their cradling skills:
Make a line of ten players, each standing two arms lengths apart from each other. The rest of the team lines up with crosse and ball. One by one, they weave back and forth through the line of players, cradling from side to side. The runners act as if they are dodging the line, who can remain still or attempt to stick check runners (according to the skill level of the team).
Or, for early beginners, try this one:
Each player gets a stick and a ball. Begin by just having the players run with an empty crosse. Once they have a feel for moving with the stick, have the kids line up against a wall. To learn the basic movements of cradling, have them try the following exaggerated motions. Fully turning the hands to the right, tap the crosse to the wall. Then repeat on the left side. Do this ten times, then bring the stick away from the wall and try to repeat that motion with the wrist but in a smaller area (as if actually cradling). Have players do this with a ball, and see how long they can go without letting the ball drop!
