Since the Sony Ericsson G700 and it's G900 counterpart is the mobile phone company's attempt to take advantage of the new touch screen niche market paved by Apple's iPhone, it was only natural that a side by side comparison of the two high tech gadgets. I had problems looking for an iPhone unit to test so I just borrowed from a friend, which means that durability tests are totally out of the question. I can't afford to scratch, much less break a loaned iPhone for fear of my friend beating me up, for starters.
It is in the interest of fairness that I used the Sony Ericsson G700 for comparison against the iPhone, instead of the Sony Ericsson G900, since the G900 has the benefits of Wi Fi capability, and would unfairly tip the balance of the scale in its favor. The G700, like the iPhone, lacks Wi-Fi capability so common sense would dictate that I pit the two against each other.
First area of concern is the phone storage space, since it's a big deal for people like me, who prefer mobile phones that have mp3 playing capabilities. At first glance, the iPhone may have a big storage advantage over the Sony Ericsson G700, because of its 8 gigabyte storage capacity versus the G700's meager 160 megabyte. However, you need to remember that the G700 supports expansion through the use of Sony's Memory Stick Micro, while the iPhone's memory is not expandable. So I guess, the G700 wins over the iPhone if you can buy a couple of extra memsticks.
The Sony Ericsson G700 once again gets the better of the iPhone when it comes to camera phone capabilities, due to its 3.2 megapixel camera versus the iPhone's measly 2.0. In fact, close inspection reveals that the G700 is actually a more capable camera phone, with a wealth of extra features such as image stabilizer, photo fixing, built in flash. Same goes for their video capabilities.
When it comes to OS, the G700 is unfairly more capable than the iPhone not because of actual technical superiority, but because of a bad business move by Apple. Third party Java software can be easily installed in the G700 while the iPhone, even though a very capable smartphone, can only use programs that came from Apple itself, with most of the service providers locking third party support.
The Battery life aspect of the comparison is taken by the G700 again. With its 12 hours talk time and 380 standby, it's going to be still running a couple of hours after the iPhone has shut down, with its battery life only lasting for as long as 8 hrs while talking and250 hours standby.
Finally we get down to the price. In the interest of fairness again, I won't even bother listing both phone's average prices on the market. The apple iPhone is insanely expensive, and its average street price is almost 300% more than the G700. Right now I couldn't think of any decent reason to choose an iPhone other than the coolness factor. IPhones are very trendy right now and much like most people will choose a more expensive yet less functional iBook over an IBM laptop with similar specs yet cheaper and more third party friendly, some people will still prefer the iPhone. But for those of us who want every bit of worth out of our money, we can go with the Sony Ericsson G700. Coolness be damned.
