With the creation of USB users have the freedom to operate peripheral devices like keyboards, MP3 players, digital cameras and hard disk drives as if they were locally connected. The growing need for and wide spread use of USB devices meant signals now have to be extended over longer distances. The standard length of USB cables are 5m, the maximum allowed length so other devices are needed in order to extend USB over greater distances. There are a number of ways USB can be extended.
Probably the most common form of extending USB is by using extension cables. USB extension cables are very useful for extending device signals over shorter distances and are typically up to around 3m in length. Extension cables are especially useful for they 'plug and play' capability. This is a great advantage when using many smaller devices like MP3 players and web cams. Most extension cables can be daisy chained so several can be added to one another to create a longer extension. Typically four can be connected to create an extension of about 12m in length. USB extension cables are ideal for consumers who for access and display purposes want to situate their USB devices further than the accompanying USB cable will allow them. They are perfect for smaller devices such as MP3 players, memory sticks and Bluetooth dongles as well as larger devices like printers, scanners etc.
A great way to extend USB devices over an even longer distance is to use USB extenders. They provide a better solution than extension cables for when signals have to be extended over a greater length. Devices can be extended over distances by using a set of extenders and CAT5/6 bulk cable. USB extenders can distribute signals up to 50m so are ideal for industrial use for devices such as printers, whiteboards etc. Low speed devices such as webcams can use extenders for distances of up to an incredible 100m. Extender devices consist of two units, a local unit which connects to the host computer and a remote unit which connects to the USB device. USB extenders are perfect for extending USB signals over extremely long distances. Despite their capability there is no need for an external power supply and are easy to install.
USB signals can also be extended using wireless technology. Wireless USB is used for short range high bandwidth wireless devices such as game controllers, digital cameras, mobile phones but can also be used with larger equipment like printers and scanners. Signals can be sent at a rate of 480Mbit/s over a length of up to 3m while rates decrease to 110Mbit/s when the length is increase to over 10m. Wireless USB is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The main advantage of wireless USB is that there is no need for hubs or wires and therefore installation and presentation is improved. Wireless USB also allows many more devices to be connected simultaneously through one connection so multiple devices can be connected directly just one host computer.
