Intelligent AIT-5 Data Tape Cartridges Introduced By Sony

SDX5-400W is a high capacity AIT-5 tape that has been designed by Sony for secure, economical and reliable backup storage. SDX5-400W backup tape supports the WORM feature while the non-WORM enabled version of the Sony AIT-5 format is the SDX5-400C AIT-5 tape. Each of these AIT-5 media tapes boasts 1.04 Terabytes with 2.6:1 compression. Their native capacity is 400 GB. The AIT-5 tape drive is based on 3.5 inch form factor and features a buffer (96 MB) that is very useful in minimizing the buffer overruns. The buffer has also helped to ease the management of data throughput. 24 Mbps transfer speed is sustained in the Sony’s AIT5 tape drive which has been optimized and is ideal for majority of the servers (windows based).

Increased areal density is ensured in both the SDX5-400W and SDX5-400C data tapes along with exceptional durability and enhanced data throughput. AME-III technology has increased the recording density and robustness of AIT-5 tape media’s protective layer. The smooth tape surface of AIT-5 data tape ensures low error rate and fast reading/recording of data. Areal recording capability and resistance of SDX5-400W backup tape media against humidity and sever conditions have been further improved by the highly reliable AME-III technology. The metal evaporation process of the AME-III technology has been enhanced upon the AME-II technology, which is the predecessor of the AME-III. AME-III technology ensures increased output frequency and smoother tape surface.

Sony has introduced a new coating technique that has significantly reduced the guide friction and has elevated the resistance of media’s resistance against resistance. This has helped to improve the media durability of Sony AIT-5 tape cartridges. This advanced coating technology has ensured running stability in long term. Tape usage history is recorded in the SDX5-400C AIT-5 tape’s remote memory chip. The introduction of remote memory chip accelerates the searching speed and improves the efficiency of backup system. R-MIC is non volatile memory chip that is very advantageous in ensuring fast searching and also reduces the time of media loading and unloading. R-MIC chip holds the user definable data, search map and the system log as well. This useful data assists the drive to advance directly to the desired file at a fast speed.

Innovative MR head mechanism has been developed by Sony specifically for the AIT-5 tape drives. This has increased the media durability and boosted the output characteristics.  The MR head technology has elevated the data integrity of AIT-5 tape format and is also very useful in ensuring superior backward compatibility. Dynamic tracking technique employed in the AIT-5 technology by Sony helps to control the tape head’s position with the media by using an actuator. Actuator is a useful system that is very handy in the movement and adjustment of the tape drive and it also turns it on/off. The main function of the actuator is to handle the movement of the head assembly on the robots’ arm or the disk drive. This new system employed in AIT-5 tape technology allows the tape head to track the narrow path thus resulting in efficient and precise data recording.
