In hockey, defence and goaltending win championships. Yes, lighting the lamp with goal-scorers is more fun, but keeping the puck out of your own net is important to any victory. Have a look at the NHL - great teams are built around lockdown defenders, who can suppress opposing superstars when the game is on the line. NHL 09 is no different, as game-players have many ways to slow down the opposition and win low-scoring battles.
First, let's chat about hitting ( right stick ). There's nothing better than laying out opposing forwards as they streak into your sector, or delivering open-ice hits that can swing the momentum of a game. By cutting off their forwards with crushing hits, you may cause them to dump the puck in, rather than skate into the zone. Similarly, it's regularly easy to deliver a solid bodycheck immediately after an opposing player receives a pass. If you predict this properly, your hit should be handy. The more probable result's a missed check, resulting in odd-man rushes into your area.
The stick-lift ( A for 360, X for PS3 ) is especially valuable in NHL 09 game. This new feature is the most effective defensive strategy in the game and will be used in a selection of scenarios. The result is often a quick turnover that permits you to assume control and go. Expect where the pass is going and tap the button before the opposing forward has an opportunity to shoot. Better positioning should help you avoid being called for high-sticking or slashing. Still, even with the danger, this is clearly the best way to strip your contestant of the puck.
The poke-check is another solid defensive strategy, and should be used to stop rushes and passes in the defensive section. This works particularly well against opposing forwards who attempt tough moves as they enter your zone. While you might prefer to employ a bodycheck close to the boards, the poke-check is more effective in the middle of the ice. In your own area, use the poke-check to clog up passing lanes and to stop opposing forwards from getting easy one-timers. Dives come with some risk, but can be particularly effective at obstructing shots and breaking up plays from behind. On the other hand, a well-timed dive can break up cross-ice passes and shots in the defensive zone. Crouching is a safer way to split up passes, and can also be used when protecting odd-man rushes. You will not cover as much ice, but you also won't be taking as much risk. With a badly-timed dive, your defender will be left in the dust. Crouches are easier to bounce back from and should be used more liberally.
Use the above tips and become an expert at defensive hockey in NHL 09. You'll have a chance to win each and each game, even if your shots are not finding the back of the net. Yes, winning ugly beats losing pretty.
