Le novità nel mondo dell’elettronica e dell’informatica sono talmente tante e veloci che spessi si fatica a stare al passo. Un computer nuovo, dopo sei mesi, un anno, è già superato. Il mondo dei prodotti consumabili e dei dispositivi portatili è fra i più interessanti perché sono gli oggetti che utilizziamo più frequentemente nel corso della giornata.
Sorpassato ormai da tempo il floppy disk, si sono affermati nuovi supporti di memorizzazione, come i cd, i dvd, i dvd ad alta definizione (dvd-r verbatim per esempio), i blu-ray, capaci di immagazzinare quantità di dati molto maggiori, ben 12 volte di più di un DVD ovvero fino a 54 GB, contro i 4,7 GB di un DVD single layer.
Nonostante siano più costosi dei DVD, i blu-ray stanno pian piano conquistando la loro fetta di mercato, tanto che a giugno 2009 si è assestato al 12% del mercato.
Questa cifra è stata in continua crescita durante tutto il 2009, e anche se sembra una cifra bassa, ma bisogna considerare che per vedere un disco blu-ray occorre anche un lettore apposito o una ps2 modificata.
Una grossa spinta all’acquisto dei blu-ray è stata data dalla Playstation 3, che al suo interno ha anche un lettore blu-ray incorporato. Inoltre la qualità della definizione video di un blu-ray è superiore a quella dei DVD, ora che anche le TV sono quasi tutte ad alta definizione, il blu-ray ci permette di godere visioni mozzafiato ad un costo leggermente superiore a quello dei DVD vergini.
Anche nel mondo dei cellulari le novità sono moltissime, l’iPhone uscito un anno fa ha dato la giusta spinta per la commercializzazione di modelli sempre più avanzati, spesso con la possibilità di inserirvi schede di memoria esterne, che permettono così di immagazzinare foto, video, musica, tutto ciò che più vi piace a averlo con voi in ogni momento.
Anche Smartphone e Blackberry stanno invadendo il mercato, ma cosa sono esattamente? Uno smartphone o in italiano cellulare intelligente è un dispositivo portatile che abbina funzionalità di gestione di dati personali e di telefono. La caratteristica più interessante degli smartphone è la possibilità di installarvi altri programmi applicativi, che aggiungono nuove funzionalità. Questi programmi possono essere sviluppati dal produttore, dallo stesso utilizzatore, o da terze parti.
Oggi esistono smartphone con connessione GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA e che utilizzano le tecnologie Bluetooth e Wi-Fi per le comunicazioni con altri dispositivi.
BlackBerry (letteralmente "mora" in inglese) è il nome commerciale di una serie di dispositivi portatili smartphone prodotti dalla società canadese Research In Motion (RIM), oltre che dell'infrastruttura che permette il loro funzionamento. La caratteristica principale di questi apparecchi è la gestione delle email da dispositivo portatile. Le email vengono consegnate sul palmare da appositi server attraverso un servizio di push email: in modo analogo ai normali SMS sui telefoni cellulari, praticamente in tempo reale senza che il client debba avviare una ricerca di nuovi messaggi sul server.
Altre caratteristiche dei BlackBerry includono la compressione e la cifratura pacchetti dati scambiati attraverso la rete, nonché il supporto per applicazioni in Java di terze parti.
